Advanced Medical Institute - Image Enhancement Specialists

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure takes place in our state-of-the-art outpatient surgical suite. We provide a very relaxing atmosphere. Our suite is equipped with a television, VCR, DVD, and stereo with compact discs so that you may relax and watch your favorite movie or listen to your favorite music during the procedure. You may also enjoy your favorite soft beverages.

The doctor prepares the scalp by trimming the donor hair close to the scalp for ease of handling. He then numbs the entire donor and recipient areas with a local anesthetic.

The donor hair is then harvested by the doctor. The donor strip may contain several hundred or even more than a thousand grafts of one, two and three hairs depending upon how your hair grows. You will have many of each. The donor site is then sutured together. A very fine hairline scar will result, but will be covered by the surrounding growing hair.

The donor hairs are now prepared by the medical staff for insertion into the recipient site. The doctor prepares the site by creating tiny slits into which the donor hair will be inserted. The doctor and his staff will start with the front hairline and work his way back toward the crown of the head, inserting the grafts into the recipient sites.

Since the front hairline is the most critical for a natural appearance, the single hair grafts are used more prominently in reconstructing it. Follicular units of two, three, and some four hair grafts are used only behind the front hairline.

The doctor will make the recipient sites so that the most natural growth and directional pattern is created. Hair will be inserted to maintain its normal forward growth with a natural lift forward of the crown with an approximate 30 degree angle to the scalp plane.

The procedure can last from two to six hours depending upon the number of grafts being transplanted.

Upon completion of the procedure, you may drive yourself if it is a reasonable distance. Out of town patients should bring someone who can help with the drive home, or we can arrange a local hotel room for the night.

If you have a large mature pattern baldness, it is important to visit one of our centers for a free evaluation to assess the amount of donor hair that is available. To achieve your personal desired result, it may require a number of procedures.  Upon completion of the procedure the newly transplanted hair goes dormant for approximately 12-16 weeks. Because hair grows in cycles, one should wait approximately eight months to fully assess the result. Our hair transplant specialists prefer to wait approximately eight months between procedures. By allowing such time you will be assured that our surgeons are not duplicating their pervious efforts or your previous investment. Some doctors from other medical groups will perform consecutive procedures in as little as three months. Unfortunately for their patients, unless their results leave residual scar tissue or other noticeable imperfections to the skin, one would not be able to decipher where previous hairs were previously placed.
